To encourage residents to walk and cycle, improvements to existing routes to the village centre are being explored. Opportunities to realign and improve the existing public footpaths within the site will be considered in consultation with the public rights of way team at Leicestershire County Council. The proposed site access design will include appropriate pedestrian links/improvements.
To the north of the site the footpath connects with the village centre via the existing allotments. Improvements to this route are being considered and could include improved surfacing, waymarking, and lighting.
Access to the site is proposed from a new junction on Broughton Road, opposite Cosby Golf Club. The new residential access road would have footways on both sides and would be designed to limit vehicle speeds to around 20mph. The overall design philosophy would be to create a street environment where pedestrians and cyclists feel safe and have priority over motorised vehicles.
Further proposals include extending the 30mph speed limit south of the site access. Additional speed reduction measures along Broughton Road, such as improved signs and road markings, are to be discussed with the Highway Authority.
The provision of a footway along the western side of Broughton Road to connect to the existing bus stop is being explored. The potential to provide pedestrian crossings over Broughton Road is also being investigated.
Technical work has been undertaken to assess the existing road network. Following this work it is proposed that improvement works are undertaken to The Nook/ Broughton Road/Croft Road junction. It is proposed that The Nook and Broughton Road is converted into a three-arm mini-roundabout junction, to remain in keeping with the village centre location, with the northern arm of The Nook being made one-way eastbound from the junction with Croft Road.
